The " Bresse Bourguignonne"

Randonnée Bresse

The region possesses a rich architectural, gastronomical and natural heritage and counts many remarkable sites. Whether you are interested in hiking or in History, this area offers a large panel of attractions that will please you.

Crossing through the towns and villages you will discover splendid farmhouses, real typical for this rural area, often built of brick and half-timbered. You may guess the age of the houses in having a closer look on the timbers.

The “sites to be seen “ are:

  • The town of Louhans Chateaurenaud: its medieval city, its shady arcades, St. Pierre’s church, the former hospital (“l’Hôtel Dieu”)and the famous weekly market with the famous “Bresse poultries”( on Monday morning)
  • Pierre de Bresse: the castle of Pierre de Bresse with its museum of Bresse Bourguignonne ; you will find a very comprehensive presentation of the nature, history and archeology of this region
  • Cuiseaux: at the “Maison de la mémoire cuisellienne” you will learn everything you need to know about the former life in this region and about the different steps of the production of the famous Jura wine

Plains, hedges, forests, ponds and rivers…, the area offers divers landscape sceneries that you will discover on the numerous hiking trails; on foot, by bike or by horse.

The “Voie Verte”, the ancient railroad transformed into biking and hiking paths, will guide and lead you through different towns and villages, offering nice trips and strolls across the landscape, either for Sunday walkers or experienced bikers.

It’s impossible to visit the region of “Bresse Bourguignonne” without tasting its famous gastronomy, one of the major assets of this part of Burgundy: one of the MUST TASTE, the staple of this regional cuisine, is the formidable “Bresse poultry” (volaille de Bresse), but do not miss the butter and the cream, the frog legs, the ‘corniotte’ (stuffed choux pastry, special in Louhans), les “Gaudes” (special gruel made of maize flour, cooked with water or milk), la ‘tarte bressane’ (flat tart made of leavened dough, sprinkled with cream, sugar and pralines)…and there aremany other specials worth discovering….

Bon appétit and enjoy your stay!
